Former chair of the Alameda County Child Care Local Planning Council Rose Padilla Johnson has served as chief executive officer of the Davis Street Community Center in San Leandro, California, since 1991. Under Rose Padilla Johnson’s visionary leadership and sheer determination, the center, established in 1972 as a ministry of the local First Christian Church, grew to one of the premier providers of comprehensive social services in Central Alameda County and the Greater San Leandro area. These range from free food and clothing and housing and utility assistance to services for people with developmental disabilities to primary health care and child care.

Besides various preschool and school child care services, Davis Street offers affordable and safe summer camp programs. Children can choose from multiple activities during the center’s weekly camp sessions, including arts, sports, field trips, and cooking. In addition, they can opt for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) activities, including building bridges and making robots.

A dedicated team curates all Davis Street summer camp activities seeking to sharpen children’s problem-solving skills, stimulate their critical thinking, and encourage their creativity. Furthermore, they intend to strengthen their bond with their families and communities. The program is available for families with full-cost daycare and such with no or low-cost subsidized child care.
