Some 27 million Americans take advantage of FQHC’s, which are required to offer outpatient medical services on a sliding scale to people earning less than 200% of the federal poverty line. They provide assistance to underserved populations including street people, migrants, Native Americans, and those living in public housing.
FQHC’s support one in three persons experiencing poverty, one in five persons living in rural areas, and one in nine children who are 17 and under, as well as 355,000 veterans.
They offer treatment in several areas such as preventive health, dental work, specialty care, hospitalization, mental health issues, substance abuse, and transportation. In addition to doctors and nurses, FQHC’s pay for providers such as nurse practitioners, social workers, and clinical psychologists. Their coverage also includes drugs permitted by Medicare Part B.
