A high profile leader in the San Leandro community, Rose Padilla Johnson has served local families and individuals through her role as the head of the Davis Street Community Center. During her nearly three decades in this position, Rose Padilla Johnson has made Davis Street one of the most reliable sources of food assistance and information about state-managed benefits for residents in and around San Leandro.

Prior to June 1st, 2019, California residents who received Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or State Supplemental Payments were ineligible for food stamps administered by CalFresh, the state’s nutritional benefits program. While low-income SSI recipients are eligible for only up to $931 in monthly benefits, a complex policy enacted in 1974 allowed California to increase SSI payments in lieu of managing food stamps.
However, former Governor Jerry Brown reversed this policy, making food stamps accessible to more than half a million Californians. Today, SSI and SSP recipients can obtain food stamps without reducing their cash benefit. A single person may be eligible for up to $110 dollars in monthly food stamps.
